Big Brother 17: Getting Caught Up

by Lisa Marie Bowman on August 7, 2015

Hi, everyone!

So, I can tell by reading all the comments under the previous post that everyone saw last night’s eviction show.  And we all saw Clay get evicted by a unanimous vote.  Here’s just a few of my own thoughts about what I saw last night:

First off, I was not a fan of the way the show handled the whole Clelli relationship.  By playing up the “romance,” the show played down the fact that Clelli have had a hand in every eviction.  They played down Shelli’s entitled attitude.  They didn’t even mention the fact that Clay got into a huge fight with James earlier in the day.  (I imagine they’ll show it on Sunday.)  I’m a huge and unapologetic romantic but when Clay and Shelli exchanged their first kiss, I wanted to gag.

Was it necessary for last night’s show to spend however long it was with Derrick and Cody?  I mean, don’t get me wrong — I’m always happy to look at Cody.  But it was definitely filter and I much rather would have preferred to see what previously evicted HGs like Da’Vonne, Jason, Jeff, Audrey, and Jace are doing now that they’ve left the house.

After Clay was evicted and he hugged Shelli, the camera picked up the sound of her heart beating.  So, all the people who claimed that Shelli didn’t have a heart have been proven wrong.

I try to save most of my criticism of Julie Chen for twitter but I was not a fan of how she handled the exit interview with Clay.  When Clay basically said some very tasteless things about Meg, you could tell that Julie didn’t know how to react.  (It was kind of the same reaction that Julie had when Da’Vonne said that everyone was scared to vote out Audrey.)  At moments like that, I wish we had a host who was willing to call out the HGs.  Sometimes, I get the feeling that Julie wouldn’t even know who was in the house if not for her notecards.

ANYWAY —

How did the house go from leaning towards evicting Shelli to unanimously voting out Clay?  Some of that’s because Vanessa went into hyperdrive, telling everyone that they had to vote out Clay because she was convinced that Clay and Johnny Mac have a secret relationship.  At first Vanessa said they were related and then she said that they were lovers outside the house.  And what’s funny about all this is that Vanessa was being totally serious.  She wasn’t just trying to make the house paranoid.  She totally believes this and even went straight to Johnny Mac and asked him if he and Clay had a relationship.

(Of course, by doing this, Vanessa also made an enemy out of John.)

Anyway, Vanessa’s efforts to get Clay evicted would have backfired on her except for the fact that Clay found out about them and lost his temper and, hours before the show, nearly got into a fight with James.  And I think that Clay’s sudden display of temper really freaked everyone out.  They realized that, if they voted out Shelli, they might have to deal with Clay threatening to beat people up.

And so, Clay was the first unanimous eviction.

That probably seems like a victory for Vanessa, right?  Well, not really.  Vanessa has gotten so paranoid and spends so much time obsessing and overplanning and forcing everyone in the house to listen to her while she freaks out about everything that now the rest of the Houseguests have gotten sick of her.  Not only do they feel that she can’t be trusted but they’re also just sick of listening to her.

(Add to that, trying to go after Johnny Mac was stupid because Johnny Mac is literally everyone’s friend in the house.)

Becky won last night’s endurance comp.  She is HoH.  When last I checked, her plan was to nominate Shelli and Steve and then backdoor Vanessa.

We’ll see what happens!

Big Brother 17: Sorry for the late update!

by Lisa Marie Bowman on August 5, 2015

Hi everyone!

Sorry for the late update, it’s been a busy day here at the Bowman house.  However, since this blog is about the Big Brother House, let me dive right into it by telling you who is going to be evicted on Thursday.

Okay, ready?

I have no idea.

Originally, it looked like Clay was definitely going home.  Clay told everyone that he wanted to leave.  He begged people to vote him out and allow Shelli to stay.  James pretty much indicated that he didn’t care who, out of Clay and Shelli, was specifically evicted.  Meanwhile, Vanessa — realizing that Shelli would be a stronger all than Clay — was running around the house and telling everyone that Shelli needed to stay.

Well, things have changed.  Clay apparently no longer wants to give up.  (Maybe he’s looking forward to getting to know Meg better.)  He’s been going around and telling people that he no longer wants to leave.  As for Shelli, she hasn’t stopped campaigning to stay since she was first nominated.  However, she’s been so aggressive and entitled — and has betrayed so many members of her own alliance — that all of her campaigning could work against her.  People in the house may finally be waking up to the fact that Shelli is a far bigger threat than Clay.

For instance, Clay went to Austin and promised not to target either him or the twins.  Austin immediately went to Vanessa, the twins, and Steve and told them all that he was leaning towards keeping Clay.  Vanessa panicked a little and started to argue that it would make more sense to keep Shelli around because Shelli is a bigger target.  However, then Jackie joined the conversation and asked why they would keep around Shelli when Shelli has proven that, unlike Clay, she’s actually capable of winning competitions and is a legitimate threat to win the game.

And, of course, everything that Jackie was saying was 100% true.  The smart vote would be to evict Shelli.  Even Austin can see that.  So, as usual, Vanessa reacted by coming up with an insanely complicated plan.  She’s recently realized that Becky is attempting to ally herself with both sides of the house so she has now been running around the house and trying to convince people that 1) Becky is a huge threat, 2) Clay is close to Becky, and 3) only Shelli can be trusted to vote to evict Becky.

The problem with this, of course, is that nobody takes Becky seriously.  Even Shelli eventually told Vanessa that she was wasting her time trying to make the house paranoid about Becky.

Meanwhile, James has finally started to tell people that he would prefer to see Shelli voted out over Clay.  Hopefully, the house will fall into its usual pattern of doing whatever the the HoH wants.

As of right now, Jackie, Meg, and Becky are voting to evict Shelli.

Vanessa and Steve are going to vote to evict Clay.

That leaves Austin, John, and the twins.  Previously, all of them had agreed to evict Clay but Austin is now wavering.  As well, John promised to vote for Clay only because Clay asked him to.  Now that Clay has changed his mind, John may change his mind as well.

So, as of right now, anyone could be going home!

It’ll be exciting to see what happens on Thursday!

Lisa Marie

P.S. What did everyone think about tonight’s episode of Big Brother?  After spending the last month getting a mostly favorable edit, Shelli was finally revealed in all of her entitled and immature glory.  I bet y’all can guess who I’m hoping will be evicted tomorrow!

Hi, everyone!

I’ve had mixed feelings about Vanessa since this show started.  During the first two weeks or so, she seemed almost invisible.  The few times that I was aware of her, it was because she was crying and having a mental breakdown.  She seemed weak and I figured that she would float along for a few weeks and then eventually be dumped as an afterthought.

However, she then won HoH and suddenly, she revealed herself to be a far stronger competitor than I originally thought.  She’s had a hand in almost every eviction that’s happened so far.  Even this week, with James as HoH, Vanessa is still largely responsible for convincing her fellow HGs to vote out Clay over Shelli.

And yet, at the same time, I think Vanessa is overrated as a strategist.  Yes, she did manage to get rid of her targets but she tends to overthink.  She comes up with plans that are unnecessarily complicated.  She spends too much time worrying about getting blood on her hands.  She put too much trust in her lliance.  If Vanessa is a power player, it’s because she’s been surrounded by some surprisingly weak houseguests.

In the end, it’s hard to think of Vanessa as being a strong player.  Instead, it seems more likely that she’s an extremely lucky player.

Well, earlier today, Vanessa had a conversation with Steve and she said something that will probably make her one of the most hated houseguests in the history of Big Brother.  She insinuated that her next target will be …. JOHNNY MAC!

Now, of course, everyone loves Johnny Mac and I wouldn’t want to go to the final two with him, just because he is so likable.  If we’re going to be absolutely honest, John isn’t much of a player or a strategist.  But, in a house full of people who alternate between being bland and loathsome, John has both a big personality and big heart.  Plus, he’s fun to watch.

Why is Vanessa thinking of targeting John?  Well, the main reason is because John is close to Clay and was surprisingly upset after Clay asked to be evicted.  Since Vanessa has been running around the house, telling everyone to vote out Clay, she’s paranoid that John is going to hold that against her.

As well, Vanessa is convinced that Julia and Liz are not the only twist in the house.  Ealier today, while talking to Steve, she announced that she has gotten into her head that John and Clay are cousins!  For that matter, she also thinks that John and Meg might be related.

So, Vanessa may now be targeting our superstar dentist.

Here’s hoping that John does win HoH on Thursday and immediately targets Vanessa.

And here’s hoping that, if and when Vanessa walks out the door, she takes that stupid wool hat with her!

Big Brother 17: Quick Monday Update

by Lisa Marie Bowman on August 3, 2015

Hi, everyone!

Well, as y’all probably already know, they had the veto ceremony earlier today!  Last night, James did briefly considering using the veto to take Clay off the block and hopefully ensure that it will be Shelli who will be going home on Thursday.

However, in the end, James stuck to his guns and did not use the veto.

Last week, at this time, who would have guessed that James would be the first player to actually start playing Big Brother?  The fact that it’s taken this long for anyone to target the house’s main power couple is embarrassing.  If nothing else, James will be remembered as the first HoH to truly make a power move.

Now he just has to hope that, after Clay or Shelli is evicted on Thursday, either Jackie or Meg will win HoH.

Here’s hoping!

Big Brother 17: The Moronic Eye Candy That Is Clay

by Lisa Marie Bowman on August 2, 2015

Hi, everyone.

There is nothing that I hate more than when a contestant in a reality show — whether it’s Big Brother or Survivor or whatever — specifically decides to sacrifice her or his game so that someone else can win.  It’s boring, it’s stupid, and it’s kind of disrespectful to all the people who would love to be on one of those shows but who have yet to have had the chance.  I guess my feeling is that if you’re on one of those shows, you have an obligation to play to win.  If you want to find love or sacrifice everything for a showmance, go apply for the next season of the Bachelorette and stay out of the Big Brother House.

And yet, every season of Big Brother, it seems that there is at least one showmance that leads to someone saying, “Vote me out.  Don’t vote out the love of my life.”

That’s what is happening right now in the Big Brother House.  Shelli and Clay have been nominated.  James is the Head of Household.  James won the veto.  James wants Shelli out.  And, quite frankly, it makes sense to get Shelli out because Shelli is a hundred time smarter than Clay.  Add to that, with the way that Clay has been flirting with Meg, it’s totally believable that he could be coerced into abandoning his old alliance after Shelli has been voted out.

But instead, Clay has pretty much given up.  Yesterday, after the veto ceremony, he went around and he tearfully begged houseguests to vote him out so that Shelli could stay.  He asked Vanessa to vote to evict him, little realizing that Vanessa was already planning on voting him out.  He pleaded with Johnny Mac until the superstar dentist was literally sobbing.  He begged Meg to vote for to evict him and when Meg tried to argue with him, they had one of those lingering hugs that will never be shown on the CBS show but which will be very familiar to anyone who has seen the live feeds.

Clay, you gorgeous piece of eye candy, WHAT ARE YOU DOING!?

I know that Clay probably thinks he’s doing the right thing.  He probably thinks that he’ll come outside and be cheered for sacrificing his game for the woman that he’s loved for a month and a half.  But, honestly, this is stupid.  So much attention is devoted to the two BB showmances that worked — Rachel & Brendon and Jeff & Jordan — that people forget that most showmances follow the horrifying pattern of Amanda and McCrae.

You don’t give up your chance to win for a showmance that’s probably not going to last more than a month out in the real world.  You just don’t.

(Unless you’re an idiot, of course.  As my aunt would say, it’s a good thing Clay’s got a nice face because his head is empty.)

So, sadly, it looks like Shelli might be sticking around.  If James is serious about wanting Shelli out (and Shelli is far more dangerous to keep around than Clay), his best move would probably be to take Clay off the block and replace him with Liz.  But can you imagine the drama if James did that?  Not only would Austin go crazy but Clay would lose it as well.  (Unless, of course, Clay decided to self-evict so he could leave with Shelli.)

Anyway, right now, I have no idea who is going to be evicted on Thursday.  I would prefer to see Shelli go but I have a feeling that it’s going to probably be Clay.

Big Brother 17: Just to make it official….

by Lisa Marie Bowman on August 1, 2015

Hi, everyone!

Sorry for the late update, it was a crazy night yesterday with both the series finale of Degrassi and a Blue Moon Party in downtown Dallas.  But I’m recovering. 🙂

Anyway, if you’ve been reading the comments then you already know this but I figured I’d go ahead and make an “official” notification:

Shelli and Clay are on the block.

Shelli has been crying a lot but she has also been trying to reach out to people on a social level and convince them that she’s not as dangerous as they all think.  Clay, meanwhile, has been pouting and laying around in bed.

At one point, Clay said that, if he won the veto, he would use it on Shelli and sacrifice his game for her.  Meanwhile, Shelli said that if she won the veto, she would also use it on herself.  James, meanwhile, decided that if either Clay or Shelli came off the block, Liz would be replacement nominee, on the theory that Austin and Julia would naturally vote to keep Liz.

But it turns out that it really doesn’t matter because they had the POV comp earlier today and JAMES WON!

So, unless something weird happens and James decided to change the nominations, that means either Clay or Shelli will be going home on Thursday!  Shelli has apparently been going into the diary room and begging production to start sending HGs to the jury house a week early.  She has apparently figured out that she’ll be the one voted out and she doesn’t want to be separated from Clay.

Finally, and this courtesy of Star, it appears that this was one of those POV competitions where everyone won a prize.  Here’s a run down:

James won the POV.

Clay won a vacation for two to Ireland and I would like to volunteer to go with him.

Vanessa is going to be shacked to someone.

Becky won some money.

Shelli has to do a knife routine and ring a bell 100 times.  I’m not sure what happens if she fails to complete her task.  I imagine she’ll get a penalty vote or something.

Anyway, that’s it for now!  Have a great weekend,

Lisa Marie

Big Brother 17: Good news!

by Lisa Marie Bowman on July 31, 2015

Hi, y’all!

I have some good news to share but first, I’m going to recap the bad news.

Last night, Jason was voted out of the house.  The house decided to keep Becky around.  Since Jason was the only one who ever bothered to clean, the house is going to become even more of a pigsty now that he’s been voted out.

Liz really showed her true colors during his goodbye message to Jason.  Seriously, her whole attitude was disgusting and her comments were petty and personally hurtful.  It’s one thing to say that someone’s a bad player or that they had to go for strategic reasons.  It’s another thing to attack someone personally like Liz did.  I may be incorrect but I actually thought I heard some people in the audience gasp when Liz told Jason to go back to his mother’s basement.

(What’s sad is that Liz is so clueless that she probably doesn’t realize how she came across.  She probably thinks that America loves her.)

Julia then entered the house.  Julie Chen really dragged this out, acting as if everyone didn’t already know about Julia.  Sorry, Big Brother, but the Twin Twist has never really been that interesting.

Anyway, this led to the HoH competition, which was an endurance comp in which the houseguests had to stand on a plank while cold water was dumped on them and fake eagles swooped down and hit them.

As usual, Steve fell first.  Steve throws every competition.  That’s as close to a strategy as Steve has ever gotten.

Austin fell next and he was followed by Meg and Julia.

And then, for a while, nobody fell.  Liz spent the entire time up there complaining about how hard the competition was.  (Shut up, Liz.)  Shelli and Clay were, for some reason, allowed to stand right next to each other so they could give one another encouragement.  (They really should have been separated.)  Becky — well, Becky was just kinda there.  James started to hum “ommmm.”  Jackie looked extremely determined to win, probably because she knew Shelli was targeting her for eviction.  And finally, Johnny Mac, the superstar dentist, showed a surprising determination.  After spending the last few weeks coasting by on likability, John seemed to be determined to win HoH last night.

Anyway, as the hour passed, the HGs started to fall.  Jackie, Clay, and Becky all hit the ground.  Soon, only James, Johnny, and Shelli were left.  The three of them started to make deals.  After making sure that he would be safe regardless of who won, John jumped to the ground.

Finally, Shelli and James made a deal and guess what?  Shelli totally sold out Vanessa!  Shelli got James to agree not to backdoor her or Clay.  However, she also told James that he could nominate both of them as pawns, if he wanted to backdoor someone else.  James agreed.  Shelli jumped off.

James is the first solo HoH!

(That’s right — the so-called fan favorite Battle of the Block is no more.)

As soon as James was up in the HoH room, he started to make plans.  Since he knows that Shelli lied about her part in getting Jason put up as a replacement nominee, James does not feel any obligation to honor the promise he made to her.  James’s original plan was to nominate Steve and Austin and backdoor Shelli.

Unfortunately, James made the mistake of telling this plan to Becky.  Becky ran off and told Clay and Shelli.  Shelli, understandably upset, told Vanessa that she was prepared to tell James about Austin’s role in targeting Jason in the hopes that James would switch targets to Austin.  Vanessa talked her out of it and Clay said that he would talk to James and get James to swear on his daughter that he wouldn’t backdoor Shelli.

However, that may not be necessary because James has changed his mind.  Apparently, during the night, he realized that his plan was way too complicated.  Instead, he’s just going to nominate Clay and Shelli for eviction and not backdoor anyone.  That way, regardless of what happens, one of them will go home.

(Personally, I think that’s a smart plan.  The thing with breaking up showmances is that it doesn’t matter who goes, just as long as one of them does.)

Anyway, the nomination ceremony is later today so we’ll see if James follows through with his plan!

Lisa Marie

P.S. By the way, Austin is currently having a sad because Liz wanted to spend all night hanging out with her sister and not with him.  WHAT A LOSER!

Big Brother 17: Not much to report

by Lisa Marie Bowman on July 29, 2015

That’s right.

You read the title of this post correctly.

There is not much to report as far as activity inside the house is concerned.  Jason is Vanessa’s target and Jason not only seems to know that he’s going home but he seems to have accepted it as well.  He spent most of today sleeping.

And seriously, it’s so frustrating to see!  The great players of the past never gave up.  How many times was Dan on the verge of getting voted out just to, at the last moment, come up with some brilliant plan that kept him in the house?  For that matter, how many times was Evel Dick supposed to be going home?  We can even go all the way back to season 2, when Dr. Will regularly cheated certain eviction.

Strong players don’t give up.  And, yet, for the past three seasons or so, all we’ve seen have been players who give up as soon as they realize the odds are against them.  Apparently, houseguests feel that, if they’re nominated after a veto meeting, then there’s no way they’re going to stay in the house.  Backdooring has become such a predictable strategy that houseguests would rather surrender than campaign to stay.

Seriously, how can you have any respect for players who aren’t playing to win?  What fun is it to watch people who are apparently willing to settle for 15th or 14th place?  Anybody who says that they’ll be happy as long as they make it to the jury should be disqualified from entering the Big Brother House.  If they’re not here to fight and make things entertaining, then what’s the point?

Don’t get me wrong.  I like Jason.  I was among those who thought Jason had a lot of potential.  But he’s given up and that is just so annoying to witness.

Speaking of annoying, how how about tonight’s episode?  I just finished watching it.  I knew, of course, that this episode would end with Vanessa going back on her word and nominating Jason instead of Austin.  But still, that didn’t make it any easier to watch.

How gross was Austin when he was laying in bed with Liz?  Bleh.  But the worse Austin moment was when he mentioned Judas in the diary room.

MEMO TO AUSTIN: NOBODY CARES ABOUT YOUR STUPID ALTER EGO!

And again, I say bleh.

Anyway, it looks like Jason is going to be evicted tomorrow.  And then Julia will enter the house and I’m going to guess that means we’re going to have a double eviction next week.

We’ll see what happens!  Things have to get better, right?

Lisa Marie
