Big Brother 17: Oh, the Frustration…

by Lisa Marie Bowman on July 8, 2015

As my Aunt likes to say, “Well, heck…”

Seriously, it’s frustrating.

In a perfect world, Da’Vonne is exactly the type of player who should go far in Big Brother.  She’s smart.  She’s observant.  (It’s not surprising that she was the one who figured out the twin twist.)  Unlike almost everyone else in the house, she is capable of thinking strategically.  On top of that, Da’Vonne is actually an interesting and entertaining person.  She’s someone who I would want to hang out with.  Unlike Audrey, who speaks in the same flat monotone and has the same trapped in the headlights look about her regardless of what she’s saying, Da’Vonne is lively and witty.

And don’t get me wrong.  I know that Da’Vonne has a temper and that has proven to be her main weakness in the Big Brother house.  Some of her problems are of her own making.  But still, even with all that in mind, it’s still an undeniable shame that Da’Vonne is on the verge of being voted out while someone like Vanessa is successfully flying under the radar.

Making it even more frustrating is the fact that Da’Vonne won the “last laugh” advantage but it’s doubtful that it’s going to help her.  With the last laugh in play, Da’Vonne only needs five votes to stay but right now, it looks like she’ll be lucky to get two (Jason and Liz).

Da’Vonne proved that she could be a useful ally when she figured out the truth about Liz and Julia.  But even after that, everyone seems content to follow the herd and vote her out.

Bleh.

I just watched tonight’s episode, in which we saw John win the power of veto and then take himself off the block.  We also got to watch Shelli and Clay trying to convince John not to take himself off the block.  It was hilarious because Clay and Shelli truly seemed to believe that they could convince John not to use the veto.

But it was also sad because it confirmed that Big Brother is not always a game that rewards the most deserving.  Da’Vonne is one of the smartest people in the house and she’s basically being targeted by the dumbest.

Shelli may get what she wants but it’s going to come back to haunt her.

Anyway, tomorrow is eviction night!  And it would be nice if Da’Vonne somehow pulled off an upset and stayed in the house.  But, sad to say, it’s probably not going to happen.

Big Brother 17: On Twists and Failures

by Lisa Marie Bowman on July 7, 2015

One reason why I often find myself longing for a season of Big Brother with no twists is because the twists rarely work out that well.  They either play themselves out and don’t impact the game at all (like the time that Cowboy discovered that Nakomis was his half-sister and Nakomis revealed that she really didn’t care) or else they turn out to be major disasters that lead to good and deserving players being sent out of the house before their time (like just about every twist introduced during Big Brother 15).

ENOUGH WITH THE TWISTS, BIG BROTHER!  Just let people play the game!

Anyway, over the past day or so, we’ve seen two twists come to fruition in the Big Brother house.  First off, Da’Vonne figured out that Liz has a twin.  And, to be honest, I’m not surprised.  Physically, it’s actually pretty easy to tell them apart.  As well, Julia doesn’t really seem to be that into the game.  Even their voices are different.

Da’Vonne told Jason that she had figured it out and then, against Da’Vonne’s wishes, Jason told just about everyone else in the house.  (When last I checked, everyone had been told except for Austin, Audrey, Becky, John, and Vanessa.  And, as I write this, I don’t think anyone has directly confronted Liz yet, though Steve did spend a lot of time asking her a lot of questions.)

If Shelli had nominated Liz (instead of Meg), this would have worked out to Da’Vonne’s advantage.  But Shelli mysteriously changed her mind at the last minute and I have to admit that I’m still trying to figure out why.  I’m not prepared to say that production encouraged Shelli to change her mind but it wouldn’t surprise me if they had.  After all, if Liz got voted out, then they would have wasted a lot of time setting up a pointless twist for week 5.

(And we all know that CBS can’t wait for Julie Chen to say, “Except the unexpected,” while formally introducing Julia.)

Still, it’s not hard to think that next week, Liz will be a target.  Which means that Audrey will get to sneak by for another week.

(As well, Liz and Julia only have to survive five evictions for Julia to enter the house.  It doesn’t matter whether they’re exposed ahead of time.)

Finally, in the other big twist, Da’Vonne got the 7th phone call!  So, that means she can now pick three people who will not be able to vote on Thursday.  That would be a great power if there were only five or six people voting.  But, with 12 people voting, canceling three votes probably won’t make that much of a difference.  The houseguests all tend to vote the same way, regardless of who they want to stay.  And, for some reason, they also tend to evict whoever the head of household wants them to evict.  It can be a bit frustrating to watch, yes?

So, sadly, it appears that Da’Vonne will still be leaving on Thursday.  But at least she got to expose the twin twist before she left…

Big Brother 17: Here’s What Happened With The Veto!

by Lisa Marie Bowman on July 6, 2015

Hi, everyone!

Monday is my crazy day so I’m almost literally writing up this update and changing at the same time! That’s dedication for you!  Unfortunately, it also means that this is going to be a pretty short and quick update.

But that’s okay because, as has been pointed out in the comments, the house has been about as exciting as watching paint dry.  Everyone seems to know that Clay wants Da’Vonne out of the house and, for the most part, everyone’s laying low and letting him have his way.  That’s a good strategy (because, after all, if Shelli and Clay are focused on Da’Vonne, that means that everyone else is safe for a week) but it’s not necessarily fun to watch.

Has the phone started ringing yet?  If it has, I’ve missed it.  Maybe they were planning to waiting until after the veto ceremony.  Or maybe Kathy Griffin got bored and decided to go appear on a different reality show.  It could happen!  Kathy seems to pop up everywhere!

ANYWAY — both Audrey and Liz are safe this week because, in the end, Shelli for some reason decided to replace John with Meg.  Meg told Shelli that she wants her safety guaranteed for three weeks in return for not seeking revenge.  Good move on Meg’s part.  Who knows?  I’ve been pretty dismissive of Meg but maybe she’s smarter than I thought.  Still, I think James is crazy if he thinks Meg looks like Taylor Swift.

So, right now, it looks like Da’Vonne is doomed.  And, quite frankly, it looks like Shelli is doomed too.  She’s managed to alienate a lot of people during her times as HoH.  And I think it’s going to come back to haunt her.

At the same time, I think Clay’s going to be okay.  Clay’s got the smile and all of that natural charm.  He’s likable and you can get away with a lot in the Big Brother House if you’re likable.  So, while Clay is the one who is responsible for almost everything that has happened this week, Da’Vonne and Shelli are the ones who are probably going to end up paying the price.

And that’s it for now!  Bye!

Big Brother 17: A Quick Post-Independence Day Update

by Lisa Marie Bowman on July 5, 2015

Hi!

Did everyone have a good 4th of July?  I did but, since I was off watching fireworks and teaching my niece how to dance, I missed some the recent drama in the house.  I’ve spent the last few hours catching up.

So, here’s the situation as of right now:

Da’Vonne and John are the nominees.  Shelli is the HoH, though the real power in the house right now is Clay.  Shelli does whatever Clay tells her to do.  Clay had told her not to go after Audrey and therefore, Shelli is not planning on going after Audrey.

John has won the POV and will be using it to take himself off the block.  Shelli apparently begged him not to use the veto and to stay on the block because she knew that everyone would rather have John in the house than Da’Vonne.  For the most part, Shelli was begging him to not put her in a position where she had to do a renom.  She knows that a lot of people in the house will be upset with her if she doesn’t nominate Audrey.

Well, John may be crazy but he’s not stupid.  And John told her that there was no way he was going to not use the power of veto on himself.  So now, Shelli is trying to figure out who to nominate in John’s place.

At first, Shelli wanted to nominate Meg.  But Meg asked her not to.  So then Shelli decided to nominate Liz and Liz said that she didn’t mind being a pawn.  But now, for some reason, Shelli has changed her mind and is leaning towards nominating Meg again.

Earlier today, Da’Vonne had a meeting with Shelli.  Da’Vonne promised Shelli that she’s not coming after either Shelli or Clay.  Da’Vonne went on to ask Shelli to nominate Audrey.  Shelli said she would think about it but … no, it’s not going to happen.

Right now, it still looks like Shelli is going to get what she wants.  Da’Vonne is going to go home.  But, in doing so, Shelli has managed to alienate nearly the entire house.  In the long run, Shelli will probably end up wishing that John and Da’Vonne had won the Battle of the Block.  Whereas James managed to handle being the first HoH without hurting his game, Shelli has pretty much given almost everyone a reason to come after her.

That’s it for now!

Big Brother 17: Fireworks

by Lisa Marie Bowman on July 4, 2015

BLEH!

I was really hoping that the plan this week was to backdoor Audrey.  Because, seriously, Audrey is annoying.  She’s playing the game hard and you have to respect that but she’s doing so with a humorless intensity that really is not a lot of fun to watch.  The ideal Big Brother mastermind is someone who is smart, strategic, and who has a good sense of humor.  (Dr. Will, for instance.)  Audrey, on the other hand, seems to think that the best way to win this game is to bludgeon everyone into submission.  (That’s the Frankie and Amanda approach all over again.)  Sometimes that strategy works but it’s still not a lot of fun to watch.

Anyway, as we all know from either watching the live feeds or reading the comments or doing a google search on “Who won the POV?,” dentist John has won the POV.  Yay!  Because, seriously, I would never want John near my teeth but he’s still entertaining to watch.

(One of the oddly endearing things about John is the fact that you can only understand every third word out of his mouth.  Whenever I see him in the diary room during the CBS show, all I hear is, “Jkkyryejey hjeithehteed pawn gjtyueryhy ohihthenendd block ituehthee uyue veto!”)

So now, with John set to veto himself, it seems like the perfect time to backdoor Audrey, right?

Nope!

See, Shelli is the HoH this week and Shelli is incapable of thinking for herself.  Shelli is in her 30s and claims to run a successful business but she is so infatuated with 21 year-old Clay that she’s basically allowing him to run her HoH.

Don’t get me wrong.  Clay is nice to look at.  I’m all in favor of Clay never wearing a shirt in the house and I’m glad that the rest of the nation is getting a chance to see what I, as a resident of Texas, get to see on a daily basis.  But, Shelli, sweetie — he’s just not that into you!

But anyway, Clay doesn’t like Da’Vonne and he’s fairly loyal to Audrey so guess who Shelli’s target is this week?

That’s right, Da’Vonne.  And I know that a lot of people don’t like Da’Vonne.  She does tend to lose her temper too quickly and she is dramatic but her diary room confessionals are a lot more entertaining than Audrey’s.  If anything, she certainly seems to have a better understanding of the people in the house than Audrey does.

But, Da’Vonne is Clay’s target and that makes her Shelli’s target.  Shelli is going to nominate Liz as a pawn.  Personally, I’m still hoping that all of this will lead to Julie accidentally calling Liz by the wrong name at some point during Thursday’s show.  Anyone who has watched Big Brother over the past few seasons knows that it could definitely happen!

As of right now, it appears that Da’Vonne’s day are sadly numbered.

(Personally, I just can’t wait to see Shelli’s reaction when Clay inevitably hooks up with Liz following Thursday’s show.)

Big Brother 17: It’s the holidays!

by Lisa Marie Bowman on July 3, 2015

Hi, everyone!  Well, it’s the holidays and I don’t know about you but I’m ready to get out there and start celebrating my three day weekend!  But before I do that, here’s a quick update to what is happening in the house.

First off, last night, Jace was voted out and how satisfying was it too watch him walk out the door?  I’m a little bit annoyed that CBS chose not to show the amount of whining and bullying that Jace did after he was nominated.  I’m especially upset that they did not share the way he treated Steven.  When Steven said he was voting to evict his “good friend” Jace, he was being sarcastic and that’s something that will go over the heads of people who haven’t been reading blogs or watching the live feeds.

Also, I noticed that Austin decided to mention his wrestling alter ego, Judas.  Austin obviously does not realize that he and his alter ego have been pretty much ignored by the show’s editors so far.  I wonder how many people at home were confused by the Judas reference.

Audrey voted to keep Jace and evict Jackie, which was strange.  Maybe Audrey is just trying to plant the seeds of paranoia in the house.  It would make sense because she has to know that she’s overplayed her hand and is now running the risk of being backdoored.

We also met the twin.  I was really hoping that “Liz” would win HoH because I just have a feeling that Julie would have said, “Congratulations, Julia!” and totally confused everyone in the house.

Speaking of Julie, I noticed that she’s at least making an effort to pretend like she’s paying attention to what’s going on in the house.  I also found it interesting that during the HoH competition, Julie attempted to prove a running commentary like Jeff Probst does on Survivor.  Of course, in Julie’s case, the commentary was usually totally off-base.  At one point, Julie announced that Audrey was off to a strong lead and Audrey looked just as confused as any of us.

Anyway, Jace was voted out on a 14-1 vote and we’re all happy to see him leave.  (We’re also happy that, even though Frankie Grande was sitting in the audience, Julie did not invited him up on stage.)  The new two HoHs are Shelli and Becky, two players who have totally flown under the radar up to this point.  Kathy Griffin has control of the house this week and her twist is that she’s going to call the house 7 times.  The 7th person to answer the phone will be given the power to stop three Houseguests from voting on eviction night.  To me, that sounds like an absurd amount of power to give anyone this early in the game.

Anyway, after the show, Becky nominated Jason and Steve.

Shelli nominated John and Da’Vonne.

Jason and Steve won the battle of the block.  So, Shelli is now the HoH and John and Da’Vonne are the nominees but the plan is probably to backdoor Audrey.

And that’s it for now!  To our American readers, have a great 4th of July!  And to everyone else, have a great weekend!

Big Brother 17: Are we all…

by Lisa Marie Bowman on July 1, 2015

…ready for a certain someone to leave the house?

(SPOILER ALERT!  I know that the visitors of this site already know who has been nominated and who is being targeted but I also put these posts on Facebook and I don’t feel like having to deal with any of the “Please do not spoil the show!” jerks who occasionally climb out of the woodwork.)

Anyway, now that everyone’s had proper warning, are we all ready for Jace to go?

Seriously, what a jerk!  He’s trying hard to convince people to keep him around and the natural tendency is to respect that.  At least, he’s fighting, right?  At least he’s not just accepting his fate or sitting around in the diary room crying.

But no…

Sorry, I can’t respect Jace.  Jace is a jerk.  Jace is a bully.  Jace tries to project this mellow surfer vibe but actually, he’s a mean and vindictive guy.  That he’s not sincere is one thing.  Few people in the house ever are.  Jace, however, is totally incapable of even coming across as being sincere.  I can’t remember, of the top of my head, how old Jace is but I’m surprised he’s survived for this long.  Because seriously, being stupid and a jerk is no way to go through life.

Case in point: his bullying of Steven last night.  Jace, obviously, looked at Steven with his glasses and his awkward social skills and his lack of physical ability and he decided that he didn’t have to speak respectfully to Steve.  He didn’t have to maybe ask Steven for his vote or attempt to speak to Steven like an equal.

Instead, Jace decided to act like that guy in high school who never realizes just how much everyone hates him.  You know the type.  He’s the guy who makes mean jokes about people, calls people names, and who always laughs the loudest at his own obnoxious jokes.  He’s the guy who wrongly assumes that everyone’s cheering him on while he acts like a bully and who never understands that actually everyone wants to stay as far away from him as possible.

Last night, Jace asked to speak to Steve alone.  After Steve very politely agreed (even though Steve could have justifiably said that there was nothing left to say because it’s not like Jace has any power in the house whatsoever), Jace proceeded to berate Steve like a schoolyard bully.  Jace played the “nobody really likes you” card.  Jace whined that Steve had betrayed him.  Jace called Steve some  names that I’m not going to repeat here.

And seriously, did Jace actually think this would win him Steve’s vote?

Jace needs to grow up and realize that he’s not on a schoolyard.  (And even if they were on a schoolyard, Jace would still be a loser and a jerk.)  When Jace walks out of the Big Brother House on Thursday, it’s going to be because he was too stupid to understand that, especially during the first few weeks, Big Brother is a social game.  The more unlikable you are, the more likely it is that you’ll be the first one out the door.

So, yes, I am ready for Jace to go.

And here’s hoping the door does hit him on the way out!

Big Brother 17: Everyone Hates Audrey (Except for Clay)

by Lisa Marie Bowman on June 30, 2015

I don’t have much to share today, beyond what you already know.  Stephen won the power of veto and used it on himself.  James nominated Jace to sit on the block beside Jackie.  The plan is for everyone to vote Jace out and that’s what will probably happen.

To be honest, I think it would make more sense to vote out Jackie, just because she’s more of a potential winner than Jace will ever be.  In just one week, Jace has proven himself to be so obnoxious and such a terrible player that there’s no way he could ever win the game.  Even if he somehow ended up in the final two, it’s doubtful that anyone on the jury would be able to bring themselves to actually vote for him.  (Probably the only vote that Jace could count on would be Austin’s and that would all depend on Austin actually surviving long enough to make it to the jury house.)

Jackie may not be a great player but she’s definitely more of a threat than Jace.  As well, voting her out early would keep her and Jeff from becoming a power couple.  If I’m thinking about who I want sitting beside me in a final two situation, I don’t want Jackie there.  I want Jace there because Jace cannot win.

By all logic, Jackie is the one to vote out but Jace is just so obnoxious that everyone wants him to go.  And who knows?  Maybe without Jace around, Austin will actually become the interesting player that we all thought he would be.  The Austin and Jace Bro Alliance will be no more and that’s probably a good thing.

I talk a lot about how all-girl alliances hardly ever work in Big Brother, especially when they’re started during the first week.  But Bro Alliances are almost always just as doomed.  Arguably, the one Bro Alliance that worked was the Brigade and the Brigade wasn’t formed during the first week of the game.  The members of the Brigade at least got to know each other before swearing loyalty.  However, ever since the success of the Brigade, Big Brother houseguests have obviously felt pressured to create alliances as early as possible.  Unfortunately, they usually spend more time coming with an alliance name than actually asking each other, “Do I really want to work with this person?”

Case in point: Audrey started a countless number of alliances with everyone and now she is public enemy number one.  With the exception of Clay, nobody trusts her.  Everyone wants her out of the house.  I saw one site where the headline read, “Is the first transgender house guest really only going to last for two weeks?”  If Audrey is voted out, she has no one to blame for herself.  It doesn’t matter who you are or what your background is: if you’re a bad player, you’re a bad player.  And, this week, Audrey has proven herself to be an enthusiastic player but not a particularly smart one.

The house is currently organizing against Audrey.  Will Audrey only last two weeks?

If she’s voted out next week, she’ll have no one to blame but herself.

Big Brother 17: It’s Monday…

by Lisa Marie Bowman on June 29, 2015

…and Monday is the day when I’m running all over the place, trying to catch my breath.  Monday’s are the days when I usually have about 15 minutes to write up the update and get it posted before I have to run off somewhere.

So, excuse the shortness of this Monday update.  But I know that our wonderful commenters will more than make up for it. 🙂

Anyway, they had the veto ceremony yesterday and, just as we all expected, Stephen took himself off the block and James replaced him with Jace.  And, as of right now, its look like Jace is out the door.  And can you blame the house for wanting him gone?  Jace is just obnoxious.  I have yet to see him eat but I’d be surprised if he closes his mouth when he chews.  There’s some people who you just spend a minute watching and you know that he probably eats with his mouth open.  And Jace is one of those guys.

However, with Jace going home, it starting to look like Audrey might be the target next week.  Over the past few days, Audrey has been making alliances with everyone and essentially trying to be the house mastermind.  And she had some initial success but, just as many of us predicted, she tried too much too soon.  Houseguests have started to compare notes and are realizing just how many deals Audrey has.

Apparently, James was planning on singing a song about Jace when he nominated him.  (That’s how annoying Jace is.  People want to humiliate him while nominating him.)  However, at the last minute, James decided not to.  However, Jace somehow knows about the song and was even heard singing it.

So, James know that somebody in his alliance cannot be trusted to keep secrets and he suspects that it could very well be Audrey.

So, will Audrey be targeted next week?  And, if she is, will Alison Grodner actually allow her to be voted out of the house?

We’ll find out!

Lisa Marie
