Don’t mean to be bagging on Amber, but houseguests have to remember that they’re on 24/7. What they say is recorded, will be seen and — yes — will be judged relative to the game and beyond.
TMZ.com is in on the act this morning, detailing the Las Vegas waitress’ opinions on Jewish people. Read the post here, but here’s a highlight:
*** Relations between Israel and the “Big Brother” house are strained today, after a somewhat anti-Semitic rant from crybaby housemate Amber hit the Internet this week. Oy vey!
Where to begin, already? First of all, Amber said the majority of Jews she knows are “selfish.” She then went on to say that her mom and sister explained to her that one can tell who is Jewish based on “their last name” and “by their nose.” Gevalt! ***
There’s even a video on that site, and I will look for more. Promise.
Now, as a counter to this news, I should note that — in my experience — expressions like this are merely based in ignorance and not in hate. Amber seems like a truly good, loving person (outside of the lying and deception and endless tears), and we should all remember that being stuck in a house like this for weeks upon weeks is liable to bring out the worst in just about anybody at some point.
Ahem. With that caveat out of the way, bag away. What are your thoughts? Does this change your opinion of Amber? Should Big Brother evict her for her comments? Or do you think it’s just a heat-of-the-game sort of thing?
Well based on Big Brother’s PAST rules on such behavior, YES, Amber needs to go. BUT, have a psychiatrist on hand when it happens because she’ll be ready for the looney bin at that point! ALSO, don’t forget she also said negative things about New Yorkers in regard to Eric. But, I certainly agree, that kind of sickness has NO place in Big Brother and IF Big Brother continues without saying or doing anything, it only says they support these discriminatory remarks! Sorry, but I’m so past her tears, it’s in indication of her past experience with drugs and I am feeling, with her almost psychotic fear of being HOH, that her time in the Big Brother house HAS to come to an end. It’s one thing that all of these uneducated kiddies are TRYING to make something BIG happen in this season with all of their silly playground antics, BUT it’s totally ANOTHER for Big Brother to tolerate that which society has grown tired of. Get her out and let’s just get past whatever they can salvage of what is the most pathetic season ever on Big Brother. BUT, I hope watching this season makes people realize that there is a LOT to be worried about in some of the youth of today. These people belong on a reality show on the inside of a mental ward somewhere.

So far, my opinion of Amber has not been swayed. I’m pretty tolerant of others’ ignorance. Now, if someone tried to “show her the way,” and she still maintained her prejudices, then I’d have a problem. But for now, she’s not malicious, just stupid.

Why are we making excuses for Amber? She has clearly made some racist comments and should be asked to leave. Ignorance is not an excuse. How can any literate person make these remarks and not know that they are wrong. You all are so quick to say that her remarks were under duress, or that she is stupid. My four year old knows better than to judge someone by their race or color. No 20 year old woman is that stupid. Why should I tolerate her ignorance. If I commit a crime unknowingly am I not still prosecuted?

Who said that, Jewels. I said she should go, did you not read that? Why they haven’t taken her out is beyond me. Maybe the show should be bombarded with requests for that move. I am not sure if this is right, but didn’t they remove someone one time in the beginning, in place of the weekly exit of a player?
Anyway, before you get too upset, I have already said Amber should be removed immediately. AND, for the sake of the game and a “twist” recommended that they get rid of Amber and bring back Nick!

Lisa, she’s referring to my post, in which I note that in my experience, ignorance and not “hate” is often to blame for such rants … In other words, I don’t think Amber hates Eric or Jewish people, but I can tell for sure that she is ignorant by her words.
The big difference between ignorant people and bigots is that ignorant people can generally be reconciled, and bigots will be bigots.
In terms of the show, I DO think that Big Brother has to look closely at Amber’s comments. To me, they’re borderline. She didn’t invoke one of the magic racial epithets that’ll get anybody booted — but enough backlash, and she could be gone.

Yeah, Amber is really about ready to blow a gasget. I think it would be doing her a favor to take her out right now and the show is doing a disservice to Jewish people if they don’t. I think what she said about Jews is JUST as bad as any “racial” comment. Same hate/ignorance, different ethnic group!
LOL, OMG remember Puck? He was even difficult to watch with some of the things he would do. What about that guy on Survivor – the guy who stripped down to his birthday suit? GEESH forgot his name – he was disgusting. But a show called REality Show Morons would be a GREAT show I think at this rate. They certainly wouldn’t lack for candidates!
And, Sooner, I lived in a racial war zone outside of D.C. and can tell you all about the ignorance versus the hate – there is no difference, just that the “ignorant” say whatever they want and I think continue to do so with the label of “ignorant” because the people around them can’t believe what they are hearing, as opposed to the “haters” who get called on their actions immediately. So, in many cases I think it’s dependant on the tolerance level around these people – and there should be ZERO tolerance for this crap. Now maybe in a political or comunal debate for those subjects – maybe – but in a situation where people are trying to live together – it just can’t be tolerated, I don’t think.

I get irritated at all the “Christians” in the house who think God is guiding them in this game. Obviously God took a pass when Amber, one of the faithful, decided to spout off about Jews. Did she perhaps forget that Jesus was a Jew? Mon Dieu, I fear that Evil Dick could be right–God must have something better to do than monitor the BB house. It’s too bad that in 2007 there are still so many people who think like Amber (or don’t think at all). I think BB should sit this DumbA__ down with a big bowl of popcorn and a carton of hankies and force her to watch an old classic, “Gentleman’s Agreement”. Pardon the diatribe, but I have a lot to say here….
The whole gimmick of this show is that it offers an opportunity to watch more-or-less average Americans in a fishbowl as they “really are.” It is obvious that this end can never be fully accomplished, given that the contestants of this reality TV game show know they have cameras on them 24/7, but it those moments in which they forget they’re being watched that viewers find so fascinating. I think Amber’s rant is proof that she has let down her guard enough to forget that she is being watched, and so we finally caught a momentary glimpse of her as she “really is.”
I disagree with the suggestion that CBS should remove Amber from the house. It is not a crime to make ignorant, hateful comments; they are made all the time. Had Amber threatened to harm another contestant (or actually done so), I’d consider her removal justifiable, but removing her for comments made during a “private” conversation (that CBS didn’t even air!) seems to be going too far. I’m certain there have been other equally offensive, hateful comments made on other subjects, and it seems unreasonable to root out all hateful speech on a show like this. If anything, the viewers of the extra footage got what they wanted: good dirt.
Should anyone feel the need to dismiss my beliefs as equally hateful or ignorant, I’ll clarify that I in no way agree with Amber’s sentiments. In fact, I find them reprehensible. Further, I myself am a Jewish girl (who, incidentally, has lived in New York and still has close family there). I just think we have to be careful about where we draw the line.
Hopefully, Amber will face the wrath of those who disagree with her ignorant comments once she leaves the house. I was dismayed that Jameka sat idly by and nodded her head during the discussion, but I’m going to temporarily give her the benefit of the doubt by hoping she was playing it smart. Maybe she’ll build a case against Amber by bringing those comments to the attention of the housemates. Until then, I’ll just have to watch.

Then she said her mother told her she can recognize if someone is a jew by their name and their nose. Once again, maybe it’s true that her mother told her that, should the daughter be evicted because her mother told her something and she repeats it? What is racist in saying that you can recognize a jew by the name and the nose?!?..
Except that it’s false, because some jews don’t have a caracteristic nose and don’t have a jewish name, there’s nothign racist in this.

Way back in the early BB seasons I thot the show was like a melting pot of different american subcultures and it was interesting to watch americans with different “values” try to live together and even forge alliances and friendships. You’d see crackers befriending sodomites, city and country folk dividing up the house, nerds and self-proclaimed cool people (mike boogie….cool??) even bimbos trusting wholesome boys (and getting screwed for it). You get the idea. This year for example we’re seeing Jameeka, who told us in the DR she’s never been around white people, trying to work that out, and Kail the bible-toting homophobe getting to know Dustin, sort of. So this year we’ve got a waspy, abortion-hypocrite “christian” who blabs the jew-hating crap she was raised around. Maybe she’ll learn something, and maybe a few viewers will, too. That’s kind of the point of the show, for me, not all the petty junior-high scheming. The guy who needs to get kicked out, IMHO, is effing DICK, whose rants and insults are completely unacceptable, especially against women half his age. Where I live that kind of stuff gets your a.. kicked. I’d love it if all housemates teamed up to take turns, hourly, banging pots in Dick’s face. NO SLEEP FOR THE DICK. For a week. Or more. Until he learns some manners.

Everyone is focusing so heavily on Amber, which I by no means agree with, but what about Dick? Is what he does any better than what Amber did. The Other Night he called Jameka a C*NT, as well as many other names, and made anti-homosexual remarks to Dustin. On top of this he attacks everyone else in the house. I think he should go LONG before Amber, But wait, he’ll probably go next week anyway.
