Drama! Amanda Rushed To Hospital After Hypoglycemic Seizure!

In a season filled with Big Brother sexcapades (Natalie, Jen, Ryan, Mattie), voluntary withdrawals (Neil) and odd drama (everybody), Friday night will go down as one of the most dramatic nights in the show’s American history.

As one of the people on slop, Amanda started to feel like her blood sugar was way low. She is hypoglycemic, meaning her blood sugar is too low. I’m not a doctor, nor do I claim to be a scholar, but I think this is kind of the “opposite” of being diabetic.

It is a serious condition.

Natalie suggested some brown sugar, but Amanda said it would have to be more substantive. Not two seconds later, she passed out and soon went into convulsions and seizures.

Gay porn Crazy James and the other houseguests rushed out to try to get her some help, and Amanda was apparently taken to a hospital, where she was given an IV and pain medication. However, if you’ll allow me to be a bit critical, I was unimpressed with Big Brother’s lack of response time.

Historically, we have been told that if something happened in the house — a fight, a rape, a murder — that people would be busting through the doors, right? Well, while Big Brother did get Amanda to a hospital, I have to wonder why they didn’t bust through those doors when she theoretically could have been dying.

In all fairness, somebody was probably calling 911, but if a producer is watching, he or she would have known that Amanda was on shaky ground with the low blood sugar. Not saying they should have made an exception for her, just saying that — damn — they should have been ready to bust down the doors if something had happened.

Thankfully, she is OK and was told to eat five meals on Saturday, meals that presumably do not include slop.

As of 11:15 BBT, it looked like she was eating a sugary cereal.

So, good on Big Brother for being sensible here, if they are allowing her to eat real food. I don’t think Amanda is the most popular player this season, but she’s still a young woman, somebody’s daughter, somebody’s sister, somebody’s friend — and frankly, I’m not sure the show’s producers won’t have to rethink the entire concept of putting people on slop.

Let’s think from a legalistic perspective. CBS isn’t looking to get sued, right? How could they not inquire whether somebody might be hypoglycemic?

Amanda bemoaned the fact that while she works for a company that provides health insurance to major employers, her own health insurance sucks. I think if I were CBS, I would have caught the bill for Amanda’s ambulance.

In other drama, Allison was taken to the hospital, too! She suffered an allergic reaction to something or other and was taken to get some allergy shots.

  2. She’s probably has Diabetes type 2 which is non-insulin dependent, her body’s ability to produce insulin is crap, that’s about it.

If BB did know she’s diabetic and STILL made her go on slop then they could have a lawsuit in their hands.

And BBB, even if she’s diabetic, her blood glucose levels could still go so low as to put her in a coma so hypoglycemic is not necessarily the opposite.

Hey, Nursing school IS teaching me something! Yaaay.

  10. I have type 2 diabetes, and when my level dropped below 40, they put me in the hospital. Normal levels are 80-120. I know when my sugar level gets too low, because I start sweating and shaking. Orange juice gets my sugar level up very quickly, so I always keep some on hand. When it gets too high, I have insulin shots I can take. If she knew she was hypoglycemic, she and the shows producers should have been aware of the danger. Just voicing my opinion.

  12. I’ve thought in the very beginning that this “Slop” is a stupid ass idea in the first place, if BB didn’t hire a bunch of “Pigs” as HG’s they wouldn’t need to eat “Slop” in the first place, what the hell is the purpose for slop anyway?

First it was PB & J and I guess BB decided that PB & J could pose a hazard to some HG’s, some people is allergic to peanuts
not to mention the problems it can cause with people’s bowel functions, eating nothing but PB&J for a solid week, and who knows whats all in that stupid pig food they call slop anyway.

I don’t think BB is worried about any possible lawsuits, I think thats why each HG has to sign a waiver, to protect BB from that very thing “Lawsuits” from any of the HG’s, we all know BB is going to protect themselves FIRST!

I say get rid of the “Slop & the PB&J” completely, and stop providing the HG’s with so much “Junk” food to eat in the house.

  14. Karen’s absolutely right. Amanda could have gone into an insulin coma and by the fact that she had a seizure just lets us knows that her blood glucose levels were dangerously low.

  16. I agree Bonnie! When she first mentioned that she was hypoglycemic…I thot, why the heck is she even allowed to attempt “slop?” I had that “feeling”…there could be trouble, and I wasnt impressed by Chel’s comment. She sure had to eat her words watching her spasms.

BBB, you are so right about the response time. I’m sure there is going to be a lot of Flak about that! That Amanda is even just laying there for one second with no one there, even momentarily…well, is RIDICULOUS!! Wendy, do you know if during that time she would still be breathing? Or, was it until she was rolled over and started gasping?

Just what is wrong with the Producers that they would even film her lying there? I hope her family takes the appropriate steps since BB DIDN’T

  18. Well, from what I know about seizures her tongue could have been obstructing her airway so she wouldn’t have been able to breath well or that maybe didn’t happened in her case. I wasn’t there so I can’t say for certain.

  20. First let me say CBS should have done a full health screening on each and every persone that was supposed to enter that house. I see Amanda being sick as pure negligence on the part of CBS because their reaction was too slow and there should have been some provisions for Amanda’s delicate situation. Maybe she couldn’t have eaten ‘Slop” but they could have put her on peanut butter and jelly along with vitamin supplements. There are so many ways to have prevented this from happening. However, it doesn’t surprise me, corporations, studios, government they never look at the big picture, just what is before them and when something happens they get all shocked and surprised like “how could this happen?” I hope CBS at least has the decency to pay her doctor bills for this incident. I’m glad Amanda is feeling well and if she keeps her mouth shut and stop saying stupid things, I think she’ll be okay.

  22. In all fairness, Allison was in the DR immediately before Amanda went down. Allison’s throat closed up on her, her tongue swelled out of her mouth and she had hives all over. the RN gave her an Epi shot and then ran out to Amanda. HUGS!

On another note: Is anyone sick of Sheila’s non-stop Bitching??? She drove me up the wall last night. Nat is sick and kept telling Sheila that she just wanted to get some sleep when Sheila continued to cry about her partner and would not shut the lip. Then Amanda and Allison are debriefing over their near death experiences and Sheila again repeatedly made it about her and how she wants to leave the house because of her partner. Um, is it just me? There is one person who went into anaphylactic shock another in some type of hypoglycemic crisis and yet a third with a fever, headache and nausea, yet it is all about Sheila and her problems with her man!!!!! Hum, if we needed to vent could we not do it with someone other then the death warmed over? Geez! If I was anyone of those three ladies I think I would I have called her out on her crap! Talk about a captive audience. HUGS!

  24. I think this season is going to force the producers to make some big time revisions in BB if they ever expect the show to have any kind of a future. Somehow over time, this show has gone past FUN into challenging on all levels from the HG’s gameplay(well, NORAMLLY) to the fans scrutiny and attention to all details of the show. They need to revamp and /or rethink the type of HGs they are recruting. America has gotten a bit too sophisticated for the one-dimensional cartoon characters that they have been choosing, thinking that they will *amuse* us…..when what it really does is turn us OFF!
They also need to make sure they are more responsible and responsive to those same HGs as they are basically prisoners there with no resources with which to help themselves.
And they need to change things up a little. For starters, get rid of SLOP!!! Sadly we saw how dire the consequences of it can be but even in past years it made the HGs weak and alot even refused to eat it. I dont think anyone signed up for starvation! Cant anyone come up with a better punishment? Take away a priviledge…. like they cant use the hot tub or the weights or something. Or go back to PB&J!! At least that’s protein! What …is Jiff so expensive that they decided to substitute oatmeal with whatever leftover crap they had lying around??
I just think that having the lives of 14 people in their hands needs alot more planning and attention to detail. They arent lab mice or fictional characters.
Anyway, sorry so long. Just observations and random thoughts after the last couple of days! I’ll try to keep them shorter in the future….lol

  26. Tinasz,
I’m so glad that you noticed the same thing with Sheila! She was making me crazy, I kept wanting someone to just give her the stupid tylenol pm and put the entire house out of it’s misery. I think she has lost sight of the fact that she was the first to attack Adam. She seriously bruised the male ego with her first reaction to having him as her partner. That was uncalled for. I’m not saying he is a saint but, she is the one who got things off on the wrong foot. I hope someone calls her out on all of her crap.

I also agree that slop has to stop.

I love my reality shows but this one seems to be getting trasher every year. That deal with James (gay porn) is unreal. I wonder if anyone has told Chelsea. If not that just makes me sick. I can’t imagine being her family and watching her making out with him. It’s one thing if she knows and makes that choice but, if not I think BB has so far crossed the line this time. Just my thoughts!!

By the way nice fight between Matt and Natalie. Just crazy. I wanted to zip Matty’s lip and have him just listen to her. All the girls encouraged her to confront him and then none of them say a word to help her out.

  34. I’ve already bashed Shelia’s motormouth in the past two posts. I’m so over her…(and so are the HGs!) Josh is like…”if you think she’s squirming now, wait until she’s on the block next week!” She could surpass *Whamber* Let’s just hope A/S don’t win HOH.

Yeah, Alli was already in the DR with the nurse administering the Epipen, but there should be more than one person on call to respond to an emergency. She might have been occupied with Alli, and I do give her credit for getting to Amanda soon after. She tried for 5-6 min. to get her to swallow something before paramedics got there. BUT, lapse of time for Amanda to be laying there unattended is poor judgement call on BB Producers.

*Star*, I agree, but want to add…Since Evil Dick’s debut, the BB house/stage has changed and supposedly the “crude” level/standard has been set “higher/lower?” Before BB8, HG demonstrated some sense of moral control to a point…BUT NOW??!! BB9 HGs are enjoying the chance to be the crude, peverse, wild, insane, and stupid “mice” that they are! This is exactly what the Producers wanted. You have to admit, they are right to an extent….in today’s warped society, the majority enjoy “Dirty Laundry” and still stop to observe an “accident!”
It’s what we’ve become. If people really hated it, they wouldn’t be watching or commenting. Notice I AM wasting my time. I just try to do it as fast as I can…

    BBAD TOP TEN
    1. LR: started w/ Matt/Nat arguing about their “non”- relationship. Matt apologized too many times and did a bad job categorizing himself and all other HGs.
    2. Josh points out (later) that Nat is a “fragile flower” but also how she dates like she’s 16 and not 28.
    3. Chels lost to Alli over who can take the other’s clothes off. (Chels bi?)
    4. Convo: Amanda on Metaformin for diabetes.
    5. ” Slop people are back on slop (Sun.)
    6. ” Bikini Day (Sun.)
    7. Alex listened to his “inner child”, (thankfully) ripped his shirt off, and adorably ran around in the rain trying to make layups with the basketball. Too Cute!! I love that boy!
    8. After almost everyone is in bed, Adam (stupidly) reveals *Operation Condor* to Matt and mentions that their original plan was to get Alex out.
    9. Before “lights out” time was spent by Matt working Adam over and Amanda working Sheila over.
    10. HOH: James/Chels getting it on….a lot of “pillow talk”
James actually admitted that one of his pet peeves is when people talk about his d*ck and that he’s very shy about it?????!!!!!

Well, it never ends. And that’s what it’s all about. If you want to see Matt/Nat’s fight, Very Short Margarita Party, or Adorable Alex Frolicking in the Rain go over to BB9Dish (This is our ever loyal BBBlogger’s Blogmance!) Her boys that stayed up all night and youtubed this did a great job. Thanks!

    8. After HT and Pool, some action cont. in shower and at kitchen island.
    9. Amanda educating HGs about STDs
    10. Matt campaigning again.

Uh…needless to say, I seemed disgustedly riveted, picked my jaw up, and I felt like I needed to go to confession or something (and I’m not Catholic).

Looks like we’ll see a different part of the “ER” action tomorrow nite.

What a mess!!!! Ryan hit it on the nail last nite with,….”the Producers must be loving this!”

  40. Lets try and remember that Amanda is a grown adult who wanted to go on this show……..a show with a long history of putting people on slop. My guess is that she had seen the show in the past and was very aware of the possibility that she may end up on a diet of pure slop. I would also guess that she knew she was hypoglycemic and that type of diet could make her ill.
She needs to take responsibility for her own health………maybe she should try the show Blind Date…..more her speed :)

  44. that was not a seizure. a seizure patient can not respond in any manner, nor can they communicate after. i think she was faking. the nurse would not have poured liquid down her mouth or put glucose under her tongue if she were truely seizing. this is probably why cbs responded the way they did.
